Hi alice: welcome to this forum!
Looks like a nice game! Just want to be sure I understand: is the word just a mismatch, or does it fit in elsewhere in this sequence?

Would you like to answer this question, I ask so I'll know if I'm maybe thinking along the right lines: Suppose I fixed the sequence, could I then add the word THORNS to it? Would it fit?

The mis-matched word would fit in to the sequence if placed correctly. Thorns would not fit. Hope that helps.

Thanks. So now I'd like to test my next idea. Suppose I fixed the sequence, could I then add the word COLOUR below it? Would it fit?

I haven't given up on this one yet: it's already given me some interesting ideas.
I could invent my own rules for this puzzle, and it would work for COLOUR after swopping JUNIOR and AUTHOR, and then one could go on inserting words all over the place - but my rule is a bit difficult. I imagine yours is easier, but I'm not finding it easy to spot.
But from time to time my mind throws up new ideas, so patience.

Maybe your advice is seeping through, so regressing to age 4:
Methinks FEDORA does not fit as it does not link to MANUAL. Move it to 1st, 6th or 7th position and all's well.

FEDORA is the correct answer, however there is only one place it can go ...... if you have the correct sequence then you would be able to add some more words

1. MANAGE 2. APLOMB 3. FEDORA 4. MANUAL 5. JUMBLE 6. JUNIOR 7. AUTHOR
What I was thinking: 1 & 2 have M,A in common - a double link. 2 & 4 have A,M in common, 4 & 5 have M,L in common, 5 & 6 have J,U in common, 6 & 3 have O,R in common, 3 & 7 have A,O in common, so that makes a connected sequence... but I could just as well have moved FEDORA to first or last position.
Next idea: try 1. FEDORA 2. MANAGE 3. APLOMB 4. MANUAL 5. JUMBLE 6. JUNIOR 7. AUTHOR
- The F in 1 advances to G in 2. The N in 2 advances to O in 3. The L in 3 advances to M in 4. The L in 4 advances to M in 5. The M in 5 advances to N in 6. The N in 6 advances to O in 7.
Unfortunately this idea is not correct either, else THORNS would be an acceptable eighth word.
Perhaps I'll get another idea soon. ;D
